CHAPTER 20

“How do we get him down?” Caitlin tried not to let panic take over, tried to compartmentalize, but it was impossible. That was London up there.

Even with James’ height they couldn’t reach the gently swaying body. As if sensing that he wasn’t alone, London suddenly moaned, his head moving slightly. Bryce and Troy swiftly surveyed the room through the murky light provided by the moon and nearby streetlights to see if there was any furniture tall enough to reach London.

“London! London, we’re here. Hang on!” Caitlin called.

“Tick tock, sister.”

Terror spiraled through her, but Caitlin refused to give Noah the satisfaction of responding.

“The garage,” Troy snapped suddenly. “Maybe there’s a ladder in the garage.”

James sprinted back the way he had come, no longer concerned with making noise as his boots clattered across the wood floors.

“Boss?”

London’s voice was weak, but it meant he was alive. Caitlin held on to that truth with a stranglehold.

“I’m here, London. We’re going to get you out of here, okay? Just hang on.”

“Get out, boss.”

“What?”

London coughed, his body jerking spastically, blood spraying from his mouth. “You’ve gotta get out of here, Caitlin.”

“We’re not leaving you.” Caitlin tried to make her voice stern, tried to come across as an employer giving an order, but the words shook anyway and she hated herself for the weakness.

“Two minutes and thirty seconds, Caitlin.” Noah’s words were pure evil ricocheting through her head.

“No…gotta leave…boss.” London coughed again, then moaned in pain.

“Not happening, Hatcher.” Caitlin’s eyes darted toward James as he ran back into the room, gun holstered, a long folded ladder clutched in both hands. Bryce and Troy grabbed hold and helped James unfold the ladder. Bryce was closest to the steps and scaled the ladder with lightning speed.

“Two minutes.”

Come on…Caitlin urged her head of security. James positioned himself next to Caitlin, his body language tenser than she had ever seen before. She glanced at him, realizing what he was planning.

“Don’t even think about it, Walker. I’m not leaving.”

“You are if that clock gets too low.”

“I will shoot you before I let that happen.”

“You’re welcome to try.”

Caitlin gave up, knowing the reality was exactly as James stated; she would lose, hands down, if he decided to remove her from the house.

“Get her out of here,” London wheezed, his pain-filled gaze locked on Troy. Caitlin knew he thought the scientist was his best bet to convince her to leave.

“One minute,” Noah cooed.

Screw you, Caitlin hissed mentally. “Bryce, can you stop it?” she called up the ladder instead.

Harsh breathing filled the room, penetrating the darkness. “I...I can’t find…” Bryce’s voice trailed off as he continued to examine the bomb strapped to his co-worker’s chest.

“Forty-five seconds, sister dear.”

“Bryce, come on!” Caitlin yelled. “You’ve got to stop it!”

“I’m trying…”

Caitlin had never heard the stocky man sound so helpless before. It filled her with panic that transcended even what she had felt while staring at Derek’s battered form through the one-way glass.

“Thirty seconds.”

Suddenly Caitlin realized London was now talking to Bryce, low enough that the team on the ground couldn’t hear.
